I just had this weird need to self-host OSM for just internal use, not accessible from the Internet. These are notes on how to do it.

Source data

The easiest is to download an appropriate .osm.pbf¹ file from https://download.geofabrik.de/ external link . Unfortunately they are not directly usable for (at least those I’ve found) web renderers.

Downloading other whole planet

Use planetiler external link in case you want to download some other regions or even the whole planet. It can generate mbtiles directly.

Vánoční skřítek a Paní Zima

Vánoční skřítek vyšel ze své chaloupky, ve které prospal jaro, léto a podzim. Už se těšil na Vánoce, i když to znamenalo hodně práce. Byly to jeho páté Vánoce. Byl ještě moc mladý. Vánoční skřítek se překvapeně koukal kolem sebe. Nikde žádný sníh - že by ještě trval podzim a on se předčasně vzbudil?

Podíval se na kalendář, ale opravdu byl už zimní měsíc - prosinec. Co se to děje? To nebudou Vánoce?

Chrliče (gargouille)

Chrliče nás fascinují i dnes, protože člověk se v podstatě nemění. Mění jen své okolí, prostředí ve kterém žije. Jeho emoce, noční můry, potřeby atd. jsou v podstatě stejné po celé věky trvání lidstva.

Slovo gargouille pochází z latinského gargula a to znamená hrdlo a tím i zvuk vody, která jím stéká.

Podle francouzské legendy byl Gargouille drak, který žil v 6. století v Seině a sužoval město Rouen. Svatý Romain jej pomocí kříže zneškodnil pod podmínkou, že obyvatelé přestoupí na křesťanskou víru a postaví kostel. Drak byl upálený na hranici, ale krk a hlava zůstaly neporušeny (drak totiž chrlí oheň a krk a tlama jsou proti ohni odolné). Jako symbol vítězství církve nad pohanským démonem byl umístěn na městskou hradbu a později byli kamenní draci umísťování na kostely a další církevní stavby.

Soustředíme se na dýchání: pomalu se nadechneme – počítáme do 4 (pokud dokážeme tak do břicha, aby se břicho vyklenulo), vydržíme nedýchat – počítáme do čtyř, pomalu se vydechujeme – počítáme do čtyř (vtahujeme dovnitř břicho)

Procrastination is often misunderstood as merely poor time management or laziness, but research increasingly shows it’s primarily an issue of emotional regulation, not time management¹. Procrastination occurs when our drive to delay becomes irrationally stronger than our drive to act. This happens when self-control and motivation are weakened by issues like exhaustion and are opposed by negative emotions such as fear and anxiety.

Neuroscience research has identified specific brain regions involved in procrastination. A study published in Nature Communications found that the anterior cingulate cortex is where the decision to procrastinate is made, as it performs cost-benefit calculations by integrating efforts and rewards associated with each option. Additionally, brain imaging studies have shown that procrastination is linked to decreased gray matter volume in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (a region associated with self-control) and increased volume in areas related to emotion and episodic thinking.

When the organization grew¹ beyond about 60 people, it felt different. We have agreed that a new management layer (between myself and tech-leads) is needed. But, I’ve started to lose a grip on what is happening in details. Suddenly, there were projects I was not aware of. There have been technical decisions being made, which I was never consulted about. On one side it felt good – the teams are growing independent of me; on the other side it felt wrong, especially for moment, where I had different ideas. Initially, I just wanted to deep dive into those. Second idea was around designing some architecture body to review key changes. They are not completely wrong². Instead of review board, one can combine RFCs (written narratives) internal link and proper delegation internal link to allow the right people be part of the decision process.

I’ve come to like the saying “don’t ask for permission, ask for forgiveness”¹. It reflects the reality that most decisions don’t need approval, and waiting for blessing only causes delays, overburdens approvers (usually managers or senior colleagues), and most importantly, doesn’t support the freedom and independence of team members.

We don’t know when the symbol as such appeared. Probably very long ago. The triangle is a popular symbol in itself, and three points naturally present themselves as its symbol / representation. If we look at other triangular symbols, such as the triquetra¹ (from Latin tri – three, and quetrus – equipped with a horn, thus three-horned, originally meaning triangle) or triskelion², the triple spiral, tripod, or cyclic group \(C_3\) (e.g., \(ZZ_3\)), we easily reach Neolithic times.

Creating beautiful two-column PDFs with Markdown, Pandoc and Typst

I’ve got a strong urge¹ to create a toolchain for producing nice two-column PDFs from Markdown sources. Also it was a good excuse to play with Typst external link , which is a modern typesetting system².

It turned out that multi-column typesetting is no easy task. But completely new flow layout engine external link was recently merged into Typst, which allowed closing of the long standing feature request for multi-column support external link . Our chicken coop door is controlled by an ESP8266 board running Tasmota. Tasmota allows for simple configuration of timers based on sunrise and sunset using timezone information. The door movement is achieved by a DC motor with a string, which pulls the door up. We utilize Tasmota’s Shutters and Blinds external link feature. The motor is controlled by a simple H-bridge (the initial version used cheap relays, but proved unreliable, especially during winter). The standard configuration of the blinds and shutters module uses time to define fully open and fully closed positions. However, this proved unreliable as the motor’s gearbox requires slightly different times depending on the outside temperature. Additionally, the system cannot easily recover from manual interventions (e.g., someone moving the door by hand).

Chlapce si oblíbil tak, že s ním jednal, jako s vlastním synem. Jednou mu chlapec řekl: „Pane, rád bych se vrátil na nějaký čas domů. Jsou tam vysoké hory a na nich rostou vzácné a kouzelné rostliny. Možná by vám některá mohla vrátit zrak." Maur se bál, že se chlapec nemusí vrátit, a pak by zůstal sám. Nakonec ho pustil s prosbou, aby se vrátil.

Pavlínka narazila při stěhování babičky Jany na deník. Tento deník si začal psát 17. prosince roku 1936 mladík jménem Jan Münz. Jan s Janou nějaký čas chodili. Deník pokrývá období od 17.12.1936 do 29.05.1937 (Jan se narodil 17.03.1919).

Jan na řádcích svého deníku popisuje každodenní starosti gymnazisty, který stojí před volbou dalšího povolání a oboru studia. Dozvídáme se o běžkařském výletu do Brd i jeho úvahách o řeckých filozofech. Dýchá na nás období První Republiky v Příbrami, kde se chodí na korzo na Pražskou ulici.

exim4 and multiple GMail accounts

mutt is my preferred client for reading and writing mails. And I do have multiple accounts, some on my private server some on GMail (private as well as business).

Initial setup was using my private mail server as single smart host for relaying all outgoing emails. That is sub-optimal as things like DKIM and SPF are basically not working and your GMail emails looks like not legitimate.

We have opted for a micro-service paradigm on our back-end. This means that different parts of the API accessible by end-user applications are handled by different services running on our application clusters. This type of distributed system is great for scaling, but it also brings challenges when one needs to troubleshoot a problem or understand dependencies between various services. Two main sources of complexity are dependencies between services and the fact that back-end services are moving between servers. Imagine that you need to go through multiple log files on multiple servers only to find that the request in question made another one which actually failed and you have to do all the searching again.

Vždy jsem myslel, že jest již příliš pozdě na to, abych začal psáti svůj vlastní deník. Teprve když jsem přečetl Gide-ův román „Nedokončené vyznání“, poznal jsem, že nikdy není pozdě. Gide, kterého pokládám za vynikajícího spisovatele, psal svůj deník od šestnácti let; já započínám na sklonku svého sedmnáctého roku. Byl jsem k tomu sice od otce již dříve vyzýván, ale patří to již k mé povaze dělati něco, až když to sám uznám za hodné. Bude mi to sice na začátku působit obtíže, doufám však, že si brzy zvyknu a budu zde věrně zaznamenávati své zážitky.
